SRINAGAR: Indian police on Saturday arrested Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chief Yasin Malik while he was marching towards Narbal where a youngster was killed on today’s morning.
Malik is also on a 30-hour long hunger strike against the government’s supposed rehabilitation programme for Kashmiri Pandits. He wants them to return to their original homes in the valley.
A youngster succumbed to his injuries after the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) opened fire at protesters in Narbal after Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani called for a strike following the arrest of Musarat Alam.
The situation worsened after clashes between protestors and security erupted. The pro-Indian state government has deployed police and CRPF personnel to tackle protests in the valley.
A complete shutdown is being observed across the Kashmir valley on Saturday on the call of Geelani.
Geelani called the strike over the killing of a youth from Tral in Pulwama and the arrest of Hurriyat leaders, including Musarat Alam.
All shops, businesses, government offices, schools and other establishments are closed and public transport is off the roads. Situation in several areas is stated to be tense.
Alam was arrested from his home in Habbakadal area of the city on Friday morning. Musarat, who was himself seen chanting slogans in support of Pakistan, besides Geelani, had been placed under house arrest in Srinagar on Thursday night.
