Simple habits that reduce risk of cancer

PESHAWAR: Health experts believe that cancer accounts for millions of deaths every year and is expected to rise further with an estimated 13.1 million deaths in 2030.

World Health Organization (WHO) and International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) observe World Cancer Day each year on Feb 4 to raise public awareness about this fatal disease and to promote ways to ease the global burden of cancer. The Theme for 2016 is “We can.I can”.

Cancer is the uncontrolled growth and spread of cells. It can affect almost any part of the body.

Many cancers can be prevented by avoiding exposure to common risk factors, such as tobacco smoke. In addition, a significant proportion of cancers can be cured, by surgery, radiotherapy or chemotherapy, especially if they are detected early.

Taking place under the tagline “We can.I can.”, World Cancer Day 2016-2018 will explore how everyone as a collective or as individuals can do their part to reduce the global burden of cancer.

According to oncologist survey, lung, stomach, liver, colon and breast cancer cause the most cancer deaths each year and about 30% of cancer deaths are due to high body mass index, low fruit and vegetable intake, lack of physical activity, tobacco and alcohol use.
