Unresolved conflicts on UN’s charter increasing fester: Maleeha Lodhi

NEW YORK: Pakistan’s permanent envoy in United Nations Dr Maleeha Lodhi has said that unresolved conflicts on the charter of United Nations increasing fester.

While speaking in the UN Security Council on ‘ Maintenance of international peace and security: conflict preventions and sustainable peace,’ Maleeha said  ‘UN cannot meet challenge of promoting sustainable peace unless root causes of conflict are addressed.’

The Permanent Envoy without naming the long outstanding issues of Kashmir and Palestine, stressed that the UN must play its mandated role to preserve peace.

She said Pakistan believed that only national actors can drive the processes for sustainable peace and added that Pakistan supports the new UN Secretary General’s call for ” a surge in diplomacy for peace.”

Speaking in Security Council Maleeha said that new and complex conflicts were emerging even as older, unresolved disputes creating fester. She stressed upon the resolution of longstanding political conflicts.
