Universal Children’ Day marked

KARACHI: A large number of children and their parents and teachers, government functionaries, representatives of civil society organizations, international and United Nations agencies celebrated Universal Children’s day with enthusiasm.

A pledge to promote mutual understanding and a commitment to the full realization of the rights of the child is made.

The Department of Social Welfare (SWD) Government of Sindh, in collaboration with UNICEF, commemorated Pakistan’s ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) in 1990 ata hotel here, said a statement Thursday.

Addressing the gathering, minister social welfare Shamim Mumtaz invited all stakeholders to come together and join the government’s efforts to ensure that every child has the right to survive and thrive, to be educated, to be free from violence and abuse, to participate and to be heard.

She said that SWD Sindh is alive to the fact that concrete coherent and consistent approaches are required to improve the situation of children in the province. In this regard, the Department is playing a significant role in designing and implementing effective child – focused programs, throughout the province.

She said that we strongly believe that promotion of the rights of children requires close cooperation with UN bodies as well as other national and international organizations.

Secretary Social Welfare Dr. Shireen Mustafa also spoke on the occasion.
