The petition to ban Donald Trump from the UK has become the most popular on the Government’s website with almost 500,000 people signing up online.
The website poll quickly passed the 100,000-signature threshold to be considered for debate in Parliament and has now topped the previous record of 446,482.
The Republican presidential hopeful has drawn global condemnation after calling for Muslims to be banned from entering the US.
Among those to condemn Trump was the boxing legend Muhammad Ali, who issued a statement calling for people to “stand up to those who use Islam to advance their own personal agenda”.
Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg also had a jab at Mr Trump, came out with a strong statement in favour of Muslim saying “in support of Muslims in our community and around the world.”
“After the Paris attacks and hate this week, I can only imagine the fear Muslims feel that they will be persecuted for the actions of others,” he said.
Trump has cancelled a planned trip to Israel after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu denounced his comments on Muslims.
He had been expected to meet Mr Netanyahu on 28 December.
