UK factory starts running on potato energy

CUMBRIA: A British pie and mash firm has become the one-off factory across the globe to put its leftovers into powering itself.

The Cavaghan and Gray ready-meals plant in Carlisle, Cumbria, is powered by a bio-refinery that converts its own leftover potatoes and potato peelings into electricity and steam.

The new state-of-the-art green generator will produce 3,500 MWh a year in electricity – enough to supply power to 850 homes. The “first-of-its-kind” potato-powered bio-generator is also expected to generate around 5,000 MWh a year in steam.

Potato peelings are taken from their own pie-and-mash food line – such as their mince beef and onion potato-topped pies available in supermarkets like Tesco and Sainsburys.
