THESSALONIKI, Greece: Turkish flags were burnt here by far-right extremists to protest against the reopening of Hagia Sophia mosque for worship in Istanbul.

The protesters gathered outside the Agia Sofia Churh and set on fire a Turkish flag. Later, they marched towards the Turkish consulate carrying placards inscribed with slogans “For homeland, national and orthodoxy”.  The far-right extremists after reaching the Turkish consulate set another flag on fire, singing the Greek national anthem.

The Hagia Sophia was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985.

Yesterday, the Hagia Sophia mosque was reopened for worship after 86 years.
