ANKARA: Turkey has exited from the European Convention on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality.

The agreement, Istanbul Convention, was finalised in 2011. The Istanbul Convention was signed by 45 countries and the European Union. The Convention obliges the governments of member states to legislate against violence against women in various forms.

Under the Istanbul Convention, regulations were drawn up in light of legal limitations to protect women in participating countries from domestic violence and to ensure their participation in constitution-making, equal access to education and, as far as possible, awareness of gender equality. Awareness could be provided.

Conservatives in Turkey say the agreement affects the family system and is a major factor in the rise in divorce rates.

In addition, homosexuals also use the agreement as a cover for “equality”, they added.
