Washington: US President Donald Trump has removed Secretary Defence Mark Esper.
The US president announced the decision on his Twitter account.
Trump has appointed Christopher Miller as an acting defence secretary.
Trump had developed differences with Esper over withdrawing forces from Afghanistan and ties between the two had been strained over the last few months.
Reports said that Mark Esper had already prepared his resignation before being sacked.
