TOKYO: Tokyo stocks dropped sharply Wednesday morning as fresh concerns about global growth, driven by weak Chinese trade data, hit sentiment with major automakers including Toyota and Nissan sinking into negative territory.
The benchmark Nikkei 225 index at the Tokyo Stock Exchange fell 1.59 percent, or 267.22 points, to 16,515.93 by the lunch break, while the broader Topix index of all first-section shares lost 1.78 percent, or 23.96 points, to finish the morning at 1,323.76.
