Tokyo shares down by break as oil continues slide

TOKYO: Tokyo shares fell Tuesday morning, as investors awaited trading cues from central bank meetings in the US and Japan later this week and as oil prices continued their downward slide.

The benchmark Nikkei 225 index at the Tokyo Stock Exchange lost 1.82 percent, or 310.94 points, to 16,799.97 by the break, while the broader Topix index of all first-section shares was down 1.63 percent, or 22.66 points, at 1,369.97.
