Strong earthquake jolts Nepal, India again

NEW DELHI:  A strong earthquake on the Richter scale measuring 7.2  jolted in Nepal as well as parts of Northern and Eastern India on Tuesday (today), India media reported.

According to U.S Geological Survey strong earthquake measuring 7.4 jolted India and Nepal with epicenter in Namche Bazar, Nepal.

The earthquake lasted for about over 60 seconds.It was measured at a shallow depth of about 10 km.

It is pertinent to mention here that on April 25 an earthquake of magnitude 7.8 had killed as many as 8000 people in Nepal.

Like April’s earthquake, today’s was shallow – 10 km deep. Shallow quakes are more deadly because the amount of energy released is focused over a smaller area.

In India, capital New Delhi and NCR region felt strong tremors at around 12:30 pm. Other areas in North India and East India including West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand and Assam,Punjab, Uttar Pradesh felt the impact of the earthquake.

People rushed out of their homes and offices in India and Nepal.People in Kathmandu rushed outdoors. There were no immediate reports of damage to buildings.

Delhi Metro was brought to a halt as per standard operating procedure. Government and private offices were immediately evacuated.
