ISLAMABAD: Sindh leads all other provinces in electricity theft, it was revealed during a National Assembly session on Tuesday.

Minister for Water and Power Khwaja Asif revealed figures of electricity theft in the country. According to the details he provided Sindh steals over Rs 34 billion of electricity, followed by Punjab at Rs 18 billion, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at Rs 17 billion and Balochistan at Rs 340 million.

Asif has acknowledged several times that the government has not been able to stop power thefts, and so the circular debt keeps increasing every year.

Loadshedding lasting for hours are the most ominous sign of the energy crisis in Pakistan. The demand for electricity in Pakistan exceeds supply by 5,000 MW.

In a press conference held in April last year Asif had said that load shedding in Pakistan would end in 2017, after China invested $ 20 billion generating  8,320MW of energy. The two countries have signed power projects, which the PML-N government claims will rid the country of its power woes.
