LAHORE: The Jamaat-e Islami (JI) Emir Senator Sirajul Haq, on the occasion of the World Democracy Day, said it was unfortunate that the big powers espousing the cause of democracy, had never allowed democracy to flourish in the Islamic states and had always imposed dictators on the Muslim word.

Speaking in the Senate on Tuesday, he said the JI believed in a democracy that enjoyed the backing of the masses as any system thrust on the people by force could not be termed democracy.

He said that the Quaid e Azam had always talked of democracy but the rulers in the country had never acted on the principles dear to the Quaid.

Sirajul Haq said that the constitution provided death sentence for the abrogation of the constitution but this provision had never been implemented due to which dictatorship was imposed on the country time and again.

He said if there was no democracy within the political parties, how could there be democracy in the country. He said intra party elections should be held within the parties and all party workers should be allowed to contest for the highest office in the party.

While referring to the Prime Minister’s package for the Kisans, the JI chief termed it a peanut. He said this package would serve the interest of big land lords and not the small land holders, kisans. and Haris.

He said that tall claims had been made on the increase in agricultural output and strengthening of infrastructure but the rates of farm inputs and farm machinery had not been reduced. He said that the rate of pesticide bag had been reduced by Rs. 500 but it should have been reduced by Rs. 1000. He said that subsidy was only a fairy tale as it was never granted. He said that the corrupt mafia in industry and agriculture was harming the interest of the small farmers by themselves availing the facilities announced by the government.
