Schedule of Mayor, Deputies’ elections in ICT issued

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Monday issued schedule for holding elections of a mayor and three deputy mayors in Metropolitan Corporation of Islamabad.

According to the schedule issued by ECP,the aspiring candidates may submit their nomination papers on February 3 and all the nomination papers will be published on February 4.

The objections can be raised on the nomination papers on February 6 while scrutiny of the papers will take place by February 8.

The appeals against acceptance/rejection of nomination papers can be filed till February 9 and disposal of appeals would be on Feb 10.

The candidates can withdraw their nomination papers on February 11 and the final list of candidates alongwith allotted symbols will be published on February 12.The polling will be held on February 15.

The ECP also issued the code of conduct for upcoming Elections of a Mayor and deputy mayors, (ICT), barring the all Federal Executive Authorities to influence the elections in favour of a particular candidate or a political party; The decision was taken to ensure that elections in Metropolitan Corporation are conducted fairly, said spokesman of the ECP.

The ECP directs that all executive authorities in the federation will not use state resources in local government elections with the aim to influence elections in favour of a particular candidate or a political party.

If any person in government service misuses his official position in any manner in order to influence results of elections, he shall be liable to be proceeded against under Section 60 of the Islamabad Capital Territory Local Government Act, 2015, he added.

Any holder of public office, who is found to have violated any provision of election laws or the instructions issued by the Election Commission, shall be proceeded against as mandated in law, he maintained.

Moreover, the office of the Election Commission as well as the offices of District Returning Officer and Returning Officer shall remain open on all public holidays during the schedule period.

It may be mentioned here that there would be electoral college of 77 members for this election and elected chairpersons from 50 union councils of federal capital along with 27 members from reserved seats would elect mayor and deputy mayors.

All elected members of the union councils including councilors and vice chairman could contest the election for seats of a mayor and three deputy mayors, he said.
