Russia stepping up attacks on Ukrainian hospitals: WHO

GENEVA: Russia is stepping up attacks on Ukrainian hospitals, according to the World Health Organization.

A statement issued by the World Health Organization (WHO) said that in the wake of Russia-Ukraine conflict, Moscow was increasing its attacks on hospitals and other healthcare facilities with each passing day.

According to the WHO, Russia has so far carried out more than 70 attacks on hospitals, ambulances and doctors alone.

The world health body says attacks on health facilities are now part of the modern war strategy, following the recent March 8 Russian attack on a newly built hospital south of Kharkiv.

Ukrainian officials say Russian planes fired shells at the hospital, causing severe damage to the hospital building and completely destroying the front of the hospital.

The mayor of Kharkiv said the first Russian attack on the hospital had knocked out its windows and doors, while the second attack completely destroyed the operating theaters.

The hospital said children and pregnant women were being treated at the hospital, while staff including pregnant women and newborns were injured in the bombing.

The World Health Organization (WHO) says 72 attacks on health facilities have been confirmed since February 24, in which 71 people were killed and 37 injured, while medical transport and supply stores were severely damaged.

Last week, Ukrainian President Zelensky had claimed that 14,000 Russian soldiers have been killed in the Ukraine war.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has claimed that the bodies of 14,000 Russian soldiers killed in the current war are in Ukraine but no one is taking them back.

In a video message, he appealed to the Russian people, asking why they were not feeling the loss of their loved ones.

President Zelensky said the fierce frontline areas are littered with the bodies of Russian soldiers.

The Ukrainian military said a week earlier that 1,300 soldiers had been killed. Moscow says 500 of its troops have been killed.

Yesterday, Turkey had said that Russia and Ukraine are close to a negotiating agreement.

According to foreign media reports, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Sunday that there is a war going on between Russia and Ukraine, civilians are being killed and it is not easy to compromise. However, he acknowledged that both the countries were close to an agreement.
