Ruling parties win in Sindh, Punjab

KARACHI/ LAHORE: According to unofficial and unconfirmed reports, Pakistan Muslim League-N is leading in first phase of local bodies elections in Punjab with clear majority while Pakistan People’s Party is on winning streak in Sindh.

The LG elections were held on 2,696 seats in Punjab and 1,072 seats in Sindh. Out of the those seats, PML-N has so far won1192 seats in Punjab, trailing by 1065 seats of independent candidates, while 285 seats have been bagged by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf.

On the other hand, PPP stands victorious with 720 seats in Sindh. Independent candidates are trailing behind with 174 seats in Sindh. Moreover, the Pakistan Muslim League-Functional (PML-F) has clinched 75 seats total.

Polling in Punjab was held in Lahore, Faisalabad, Gujrat, Chakwal, Bhakkar, Nankana Sahib, Kasur, Pakpattan, Okara, Lodhran, Vehari and Bahawalnagar districts.

While in Sindh, polling was held in Sukkur, Khairpur, Shikarpur, Kashmore, Ghotki, Qamber, Larkana, Shahdadkot and Jacobabad.

According to the Secretary Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Babar Yaqoob Fateh Muhammad, overall, the election was peaceful except a firing incident that killed 11 people in Khairpur district of Sindh. He observed that the elections were held free, fair and transparent.

‘The commission would take an action against those involved in mismanagement due to which polls were postponed on 26 seats in Punjab and Sindh provinces,’ he said. Meanwhile, the ECP has also taken notice of hooliganism in Faisalabad.

The ECP has sought report from the IG and Chief Secretary of Punjab about the incident in which one person was killed and two others injured.
