LAHORE: Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) chief Dr Tahirul Qadri warned the government on Tuesday against creating any hurdle in making the Model Town tragedy report public, hinting at adopting an option of protests.
Addressing a presser here, Dr Qadri said that his 14 activists were martyred and over 90 received bullet wounds in the Model Town incident. The Punjab chief minister had earlier said that he would resign if he was found involved in the incident, the PAT chief recalled.
Praising the judges of higher courts, he said that hey had raised the flag of law and justice but he had not get justice so far.
Dr Qadri demanded of the government to hand him over the inquiry report today or else he along with the heirs of martyrs would come onto streets for the same.
We will go through the report to confirm if any changes were made to it, he added.
Earlier in the day, the Lahore High Court had ordered the Punjab government to release the inquiry report on the Model Town tragedy within a month.
At least 14 people were killed and 90 others injured in clashes between the police and workers of the Pakistan Awami Tehreek as authorities moved to remove encroachments in front of Dr Tahirul Qadri’s house in Model Town on June 17, 2014.
An inquiry panel known as Justice Baqar Najfi Commission was tasked with probing the incident.
The commission had report had also recorded statements of Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Law Minister Rana Sanaullah.
Later, LHC’s Justice Mazahir Ali Akbar Naqvi had ordered the government to make the report public after families of the victims of the tragedy moved an application to disclose the report.
The LHC had asked the Punjab government to release the report to fulfill the requirements of justice.
The Punjab government, however, moved an intra court appeal against the court’s decision before a full bench of the high court which reserved the verdict on November 24.
A three member full bench today announced the verdict, asking the government to provide the copies of the inquiry report to the victim families.
The government is likely to move the Supreme Court against the Lahore High Court decision.
