ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan on Wednesday said that he has written an open letter to United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki Moon to resolve Myanmar’s Rohingya crisis.
In a series of tweets on Wednesday, The PTI chief announced that he has written an open letter to UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon to help Myanmar’s Rohingya Muslims as they are left helpless on boats in huge seas.
Imran Khan also expressed displeasure over Pakistan government’s silence over the issue citing the Turkish government’s move to send naval ships to rescue the persecuted community.
The Myanmar government has forcibly segregated Rohingya from the rest of the population in Rakhine state. They live confined in enclaves — rural ghettos, in effect — from which they are not allowed to leave. The government refuses to recognize them as a legitimate ethnic group and as citizens of Myanmar.
Opposition leader and Nobel Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi has faced international criticism for failing to speak out on behalf of the nation’s many ethnic groups, including the Rohingya.
