ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has convened a meeting of senior federal ministers for consultation on Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) lawmakers’ resignations from assemblies today.
The meeting has been summoned at 11:30 AM and will be attended among others by Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, Information Minister Pervaiz Rasheed and legal experts.
The meeting will deliberate on whether to accept MQM resignations or to look for a legal path to return these. Lawmakers from the MQM resigned from the Senate, National Assembly and Sindh Assembly on Wednesday over claims of being victimized in the ongoing operation in Karachi.
The party’s lawmakers met National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq in his chamber where they individually submitted their resignations.
The MQM’s provincial legislators met Sindh Assembly Speaker Aga Siraj Durrani in his chamber where party’s provincial leader Khwaja Izharul Hassan submitted resignations of the 51 lawmakers.
The party’s eight senators also submitted their resignations to the Senate Secretariat.
