PM Shehbaz forms National Economic Council to tackle economic challenges

ISLAMABAD: A meeting of economists was held under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in which the current dire economic situation facing the country was considered in detail.

The meeting also decided to form a National Economic Council.

According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed the economists at the meeting to prepare recommendations on an urgent basis.

According to the statement, the proposals will be formulated in the light of the views of sections related to agriculture, industry, investment and banking.

The statement said that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has decided to form a National Economic Council, which will be composed of impartial and eminent economists.

During the meeting, the Finance Secretary briefed the prime minister on the economic situation of the country, revenue and budget deficits.

The prime minister said that in view of the economic situation and serious financial risks, the immediate medium and long term targets should be clearly defined and comprehensive recommendations on policy options should be made so that concrete steps can be taken.

The prime minister also directed to formulate comprehensive proposals for providing relief to the people and controlling inflation. The prime minister also issued special instructions for monitoring of Ramazan Bazaar during Ramazan and immediate reduction in prices of essential commodities.
