ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Wednesday suspended hearing on four references filed against prime minister seeking his disqualification regarding Panamagate scandal on grounds that the Supreme Court had already taken up the matter.

The chief election commissioner hearing the references observed that the matter had already been taken up by the apex court and why don’t we stop proceeding till any ruling comes from the SC.

Sulman Butt, a counsel for prime minister, prayed the commission to suspend the proceedings recalling that in the past cases against Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif in high courts had been suspended due to ongoing hearings against them in the SC.

PPP’s Latif Khosa said that we are not party to the case in the SC and the apex court has not stopped the ECP from hearing. While endorsing Khosa’s point of view Hamid Khan said that ECP enjoys authority to continue hearing despite the fact that the SC had taken up the matter.

Later, the chief election commissioner suspended the hearing until ruling comes from the SC.
