LAHORE: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is weighing its options before finalising Waqar Younis’s replacement as Head Coach of the national team with the decision not expected before April.

Talking to APP, a PCB official said that former Test bowler Aaqib Javed, who is currently coaching the United Arab Emirates (UAE) team, had approached the board officials during the Pakistan Super League (PSL) in Dubai and expressed his eagerness to take up the assignment of the national team’s head coach.

“The board has not decided anything on this matter yet as current coach Waqar Younis’s contract will expire in July,” he said.

He said however the board has asked Waqar to remain as coach till the series against England in July. “After the conclusion of the World Twenty20, the board will decide about the coach”.

He said the board will thoroughly monitor the performance in the World T20 and then will make any decision.

He said currently Aaqib also has a contract with the UAE, therefore the PCB has also this thing in mind.

Aaqib played 22 Tests and 163 One Days for Pakistan between 1988 and 1998. He was a key member of the Pakistan team that won the 1992 World Cup. He was also the bowling coach of the Pakistan cricket team but resigned in February 2012 to become the bowling and head coach of the UAE national cricket team.

He has also coached Pakistan’s Under-19 team to victory in the 2004 U19 Cricket World Cup. Aaqib was also the chief coach of the National Cricket Academy in Pakistan. Aaqib has, in the past, also helped with the development of the Afghanistan national cricket team.
