ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Friday offered former Captain and current Afghanistan team coach Inzamam-ul-Haque the position of the Chief Selector.
According to a private news channel, PCB has extended an offer to the Multan-born batsman in order to revive the game in the country.
The PCB Chairman Shahryar Khan wants to raise the current national team’s standard at least on the level of the 90s when Pakistan won their only World Cup in 1992 under Imran Khan’s leadership, clinched the three-Test series 2-0 on the tour of England and then finished runners-up in the same country in the 1999 World Cup.
However, the former captain has not yet accepted PCB’s offer as currently Inzamam’s contract is with the Afghanistan team as its coach and his contract is to expire in November 2017.In his tenure Afghanistan team beat West Indies in the World Twenty20 by six runs.
Inzamam has asked for some time from PCB to think about the offer. He wants time to see whether he is a suitable candidate for Chief Selector or not.
It may be mentioned that Inzamam was a part of the 1992 World Cup winning squad.Inzamam rose to fame in the semi-final of the 1992 World Cup, in which he scored 60 off 37 balls against the New Zealand team.
Inzamam captained Pakistan in 30 Tests, winning 11, drawing 9 and losing 10. His tenure as captain ended after Pakistan’s early exit from the 2007 Cricket World Cup.On October 5, 2007, Inzamam retired from international cricket following the second Test match against South Africa. He is the leading run scorer for Pakistan in One-Day Cricket and the third-highest run scorer for Pakistan in Test cricket, after Younis Khan and Javed Miandad.
