Panama leaks: JI announces protest in Punjab on Apr 24

LAHORE: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Ameer, Senator Sirajul Haq on Tuesday announced to hold a protest demonstration on April 24 at a venue in Punjab province in connection with Panama revelations.

He said that the Panama documents exposed high-profile corruption activities of elites in Pakistan. He demanded accountability of prime minister first instead of taxi driver.

While addressing a press conference post meeting with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf vice chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi in Islamabad here.

The JI Ameer said they would also hold a public meeting on April-23 in Peshawar. Siraj continued he will announce strategy against financial and electoral corruption during protest in Punjab province on April 24, however, he did not reveal venue of the upcoming demonstration.

He said that Panama leaks had uncovered corruption of ruling class across the globe. He added names of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his family member were also included in the list.

Haq said that around 200 million people were affected by the financial terrorism of current rulers. He demanded an independent, fully-authorised commission chaired by the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP); adding an interim prime minister should be appointed until the commission concludes its investigation.

He said it is a moral need that prime minister should tender resignation post Panama leaks.

Talking to journalists, Shah Mehmood Qureshi said the Imran Khan had already rejected PM’s commission. He also demanded an independent commission led by the CJP to probe the allegations besides its forensic audit.

Qureshi reiterated the PTI’s stance to celebrate its foundation day on April 24 as per announcement for venue in the federal capital Islamabad.

He said PTI will announce its future plan on its foundation day if the government failed to form an independent commission by April 24. He affirmed the political party could choose option of sit-in at Raiwind, the residence of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
