ISLAMABAD: The federal government has decided to dispatch letter to Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Anwar Zaheer Jamali to form an independent probe commission over Panama Leaks citing current political situation of the country.
The decision was made in a high-level meeting chaired by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif which was attended by federal ministers and PM’s closer aides to discuss ongoing political scenario and formation of investigation commission over Panama documents.
Sources said that Railways’ Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique recommended to contact the Supreme Court (SC) to seek formation of a judicial commission over Panama Leaks which was apparently accepted by the political authorities.
Moreover, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar also contacted opposition leader in the National Assembly (NA) Syed Khursheed Shah to apprise him regarding next steps of the government.
Sources said a letter will be dispatched to Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Anwar Zaheer Jamali within next 24-48 hours while the government also started consultations with legal experts in this regards.
It should be mentioned the opposition parties had also demanded a CJP-led probe commission which the government went contrary to the demand by selecting a commission led by a former judge, Justice retd Sarmad Usmani. However, the recent statement of Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif against corruption elements apparently turned situation to push the authorities into formation of an independent commission.
