Pakistan Railways deficit jumps to Rs46 billion

Lahore: The railway deficit has increased by about Rs11 billion during 2020, says railway department’s annual report.

According to the report, the total number of railway employees is 67,627 but during the last financial year, Rs28.21 billion was spent on salaries of these employees while Rs31.41 billion was spent on pensions for retired employees.

It revealed that the number of coaches, railway locomotives, passenger coaches and freight trains decreased. The number of locomotives decreased from 478 to 472.

The report said that passenger coaches fell from 1,460 to 1,378 while freight coaches fell from 16,159 to 14,327.

It further said that not only the number of railway stations has been increased but also the number of passengers has increased.
