WASHINGTON: Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United Nations Dr Maleeha Lodhi has said that Pakistan firmly opposes the creation of new permanent seats in the Security Council.

She was addressing the UN General Assembly session on Security Council Reforms.

Maleeha Lodhi termed the creation of new permanent seats the antithesis of principles enshrined in the UN Charter.

She, however, said that Pakistan supports expansion of non-permanent seats in the Security Council to make it more democratic, accountable, transparent and effective.

She said that process of reform will make the platform more democratic, accountable and effective. Lodhi said that the long deadlock in the way of reforms is due to certain states.

“These states want self-arrogated right to unequal status,” she said.
