Pakistan is observing 17th anniversary of Youm-e-Takbeer, The Day of Greatness, with national zeal and fervor on Thursday (today) to commemorate historical nuclear tests conducted in Chaghi on May 28, 1998 during 2nd tenure of the then Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
On the day, Pakistan emerged as first nuclear power in Muslim World and seventh country around the world having nuclear capabilities. Youm-e-Takbir is celebrated as a national day when Pakistan detonated seven nuclear devices in Chagai-I and Chagai-II 17 days after the incident of India’s five detonations of Pokhran-II on May 11, 13 of 1998 .
Abdul Qadeer Khan renowned as ‘Mohsin-e-Pakistan’ and more popularly known as A. Q. Khan is a Pakistani nuclear physicist and a metallurgical engineer who played major role to establish the Kahuta Research Laboratories (KRL) in 1976 being both its senior scientist and the Director-General until his retirement in 2001 besides being prominent figure in different science projects.
Different ceremonies will be organised across the country including Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan to celebrate the national day.
Citing the significance of the day in national history, Pakistan Post had issued commemorative Postage Stamp on the occasion of first anniversary of Nuclear Tests on May 28, 1999.
