Over 400 flights cancelled as Istanbul receives 40 cm snowfall

ISTANBUL: A snowstorm that started on Friday evening has disrupted air and road traffic in the country’s largest city on Saturday morning. The city that connects two continents has received 40 centimeters (15.7″) of snow so far.

A highway near Bahcesehir district had a road accident involving 11 trucks. As a result, traffic on the highway remained suspended for a few hours causing problems for commuters. The thoroughfare was opened after fire trucks and staff of municipality arrived the scene and towed the collided trucks.

Sources said that at least 52 road accidents had been reported on the TEM and E5 highways due to the snowstorm that also caused cancellation of over 400 flights to and from Istanbul.

Istanbul governor has set up a temporary emergency desk to deal with any snowstorm-related incident.
