KARACHI: Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi Amir Engr. Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman has said that running only 16 busses for a city with more than 20 million individuals is tantamount to the mockery of citizens.
He said that the measure is seemed as an attempt to put the issue under carpet, instead of taking serious efforts to address a deep rooted issue.
In a statement on Wednesday, he said that at least 1000 buses are needed immediately to reduce the vacuum, created by the ban on CNG rickshaws, while a proper mass transit system is must to resolve the transport related issues of the city, he added.
Criticizing the government’s cosmetic measures and non-serious attitude towards the problems of the metropolis, he said that the government had announced to bring 26 green busses on roads, while only 16 were brought on the scheduled day. He expressed his grave concern over such lame progress on the part of the government.
The JI leader said that still the provincial government is badly failed to reduce the miseries of commuters in the city. He accused the government of showing extreme of negligence, forcing millions of people to suffer on the roads of Karachi.
He said that Karachi is a commercial hub of the city and is an industry based city. Millions of poor citizens go to factories and other workplaces daily through conventional means of transportation. The poor policies of the last several governments have been piling up the difficulties for commuters in the city, he said.
Engr. Naeem further said that inappropriate policies on CNG have also worsened the situation. It is high time for the government to resolve the issue through introducing a mass transit system in the city, he concluded.
