ABUJA: After no report of polio case in the country for at least a year, World Health Organisation has decided to discharge Nigeria from the list of specified countries for polio.
The announcement was made in the meeting of World Anti-Polio Initiative in New York on Friday.
This is pertinent to mention here that the polio eradication campaign had to face difficulties in Nigeria where the vaccination was boycotted 10 years back on the perception that it leads to infertility.
WHO said any country could be declared free of polio when no new polio case would emerge there for three years.
The polio-hit countries’ list now contains only two names that are Pakistan and Afghanistan, where polio could not be yet contained.
