KANDAHAR: A friendly air strike killed at least 11 police personnel on Monday in Helmand province, Afghanistan.
An interior ministry spokesman said that the air strike was carried out by the NATO forces but the NATO refused to hold any air strike in Helmand on Sunday.
Afghanistan air force and the defence ministry reluctant to comment on the incident.
“Eleven counter-narcotics police were killed and four others were wounded in an air strike carried out by international forces in Garmsir district of Helmand province,” deputy interior ministry spokesman Najib Danish said.
A spokesman for the counter-narcotics police at the interior ministry confirmed the death toll. It is pertinent to mention here that US-led NATO forces ended their combat mission in Afghanistan last December, leaving local forces to battle militants alone on the ground.
