Dhaka: Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh Naib Ameer Maulana Dilawar Hussain Saeedi passed away in jail.

Maulana Dilawar Hussain Saeedi suffered a heart attack in jail, was shifted to PG Hospital in Dhaka where he died. Thousands of people came out on the streets and protested strongly over the tragic death in custody.

He was an internationally renowned commentator, author of several books and a famous religious scholar while his congregations were well attended.

Maulana Dilawar Hussain was arrested in June 2010. The so-called war crimes tribunal in Bangladesh sentenced Maulana Dilawar Hussain Saydi to death in 2013. He had filed a petition against the sentence and the Supreme Court commuted the death sentence to life imprisonment, since which he has been in jail.

Human rights organizations have severely criticized the Bangladesh war crimes tribunal, saying that the court does not meet international standards. This tribunal has become a political tool of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajid through which the government is crushing the opposition parties Bangladesh Nationalist Party BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami.
