ISLAMABAD: NAB has Thursday arrested Syed Khuwaja Alqama, Ex- Vice Chancellor Bahauddin Zakariya University (BZU) Multan and Hamza Munir, Director Lahore Campus BZU on the charges of misuse of authority & cheating public at large by opening a Sub Campus of the university at Lahore illegally. The action has been taken by Director General NAB Multan in pursuance of policy for speedy disposal of mega corruption cases involving influential accused persons.
Brief facts of the case are that the accused Syed Khuwaja Alqama, Ex. Vice Chancellor, Malik Munir Hussain, Registrar, BZU, Munir Bhatti & his son Hamza Munir, proprietors of West Continental Group in connivance with each other opened a Sub Campus at Lahore in violations of existing law/ rules & policies.
Accused in the capacity of “Vice-Chancellor BZU, Multan” illegally signed the Deed of Agreement by exercising the emergency powers vested with his office. While on the other hand power to enter into such an agreement vests with the University Syndicate and the same was never delegated to the Vice Chancellor for this specific purpose. Accused in connivance with the Registrar BZU, Multan issued the NOC to the M/s West Continental Group (WCG) without getting approval from the University Syndicate and observance of instructions given by the Higher Education Commission, Higher Education Department and the Finance Department, Govt. of the Punjab. An advertisement was published in the press with remarks “HEC recognized degree” to allure the students.
The proprietors of the M/s West Continental Group, running Sub Campus of BZU at Lahore collected an amount of Rs.925 million as admission fees/ other dues etc.through cheating and fraud.
