RAWALPINDI: Religious parties on Wednesday moved an application with the City District Government Rawalpindi (CDGR) seeking permission to hold Mumtaz Qadri’s chehlum on March 27 at Liaquat Bagh.
The CDGR has sent the application to the Punjab government for approval. Shabab-i-Islami Chairman Hanif Qureshi, however, claimed that the CDGR had granted formal permission to hold chehlum at Liaquat Bagh.
A senior official of CDGR told the media that the issue was discussed at a meeting of District Intelligence Committee with Commissioner Azmat Mehmood and Regional Police Officer Wasal Fakhar Sultan Raja in the chair.
He said originally the meeting was called to discuss security in the district for March 23 events but it also took up Mumtaz Qadri’s chehlum being held on March 27.
He said the formal permission for holding Chehlum at Liaquat Bagh had not been granted as yet but the law enforcement agencies had been directed to take measures to maintain security on the occasion.
He said the administration and police had been asked to chalk out a security plan for the ceremony in coordination with Ulema.
Shabab-i-Islami chairman Hanif Qureshi said religious parties had started arrangements for the chehlum at Liaquat Bagh.
“We have submitted an application for permission but the local administration had no objection. They required some time so that the issue could be brought to the notice of the Punjab government,” he said.
