KARACHI: Sindh Minister for Transportation Mumtaz Jakharani and Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi Ameer Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman have reached on a consensus to regularize and restore the QinQi and CNG rickshaws as per the directives of the apex court.
In a meeting on Thursday, both Jakharani and Naeem agreed that a mass transit system is a must to cater the needs of transportation of Karachi residents and till its restoration, rickshaws are playing a substitute role. They also stressed the need for restoration of Green buses and circular railway.
Speaking on the occasion, JI leader said that some five million people have been deprived of a cheap mean of transportation due to the ban on the rickshaws. He further said that the ban also deprived tens of thousands of people from their livelihood.
He also said that the ban had created a human tragedy as more than one rickshaws drivers committed suicide as they were compelled to do so, through such a cruel move.
The minister also informed the JI delegation that consultations on the issue have been completed among relevant circles and a compiled report would be presented before the court on September 17, 2015.
The JI Amir thanked the minister for his positive response towards the issue and taking positive steps in this regard.
