TRIPOLI: A Libyan court has sentenced Muammar Gaddafi’s most prominent son, Saif al-Islam, to death in absentia for suppressing peaceful protests during the country’s 2011 revolution that ended his father’s rule.
The Tripoli court also handed down a death sentence by firing squad to Gaddafi’s former spy chief, Abdullah al-Senussi, and his former prime minister, Baghdadi al-Mahmoudi.
It is believed the son of the long-standing leader was sentenced in absence, as he is still being held by armed militiamen in the Libyan city of Zintan, who refuse to recognise the Tripoli government.
Saif Gaddafi is also wanted by the International criminal court in The Hague on charges of crimes against humanity.
