Legislators criticised over silence on rickshaws’ issue

KARACHI: A large number of QinQi and CNG rickshaw drivers held a protest demonstration, under the banner of Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi, for restoration and regularization of the rickshaws, here on Friday, at Lasbela chawk.

Addressing the protesting rickshaw drivers, JI leader Younas Barai expressed his sorrow over the criminal silence of those politicians who claim to be the representatives of the city but fail to utter a word even when the poor drivers were compelled to commit suicide.

The JI leader said that just to serve some unseen interests, the government has deprived of the millions of people from an easy and economical way of transportation.

He demanded of the government to pay some heed to the miseries and real issues of the city, instead of just following their political interests. He vowed that JI would never let anyone to deprive rickshaw drivers of their livelihood.

Protesters’ leader Mahmood Hamid said that the politicians compelled poor rickshaw drivers towards suicide. The not only neglect the needs of millions of commuters and instead of introducing mass transit system, they even deprived of them from the rickshaws. He also demanded of the government to regularize the QinQi and CNG rickshaws.

He also hailed the role of the apex judiciary over their stance on the issue. Intikhab Alam Soori, Malik Shafique and others also spoke on the occasion.
