KARACHI/LAHORE: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has grabbed visible victory in the Sindh province while Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) in Punjab, according to unofficial results of the second phase of Local Government (LG) election.
Unofficial results of 1132 out of total 1833 seats received to the Daily Jasarat showed that PPP won 793 seats while second largest mandate holder political party, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), won 113 seats. 107 independent candidates won the elections across the Sindh, 62 seats by PML-N, Pakistan Muslim League Functional (PML-F) 22, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) 7, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazl (JUI-F) 03 and 25 belonging other political parties.
In Punjab, PML-N is currently leading in the Punjab with 874 seats, according to results of 1906 out of 2399 seats across Punjab, followed by Independent candidates with 705 seats. Arch-rival of ruling political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) grabbed 285 seats, PPP 12, Pakistan Muslim League Quaid (PML-Q) 9, Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) 8, Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) 2 while 11 candidates won who belong to other political parties.
Polling for second phase of local government elections held in 15 districts of Sindh and 12 districts of Punjab here on Thursday.
Punjab districts include Sargodha, Gujranwala, Sahiwal, Attock, Jhelum, Mianwali, Chiniot, Toba Tek Singh, Hafizabad, Mandi Bahauddin, Sheikhupura and Khanewal.
In Sindh, polling held in Hyderabad, Tando Muhammad Khan, Tando Allayar, Matiari, Dadu, Jamshoro, Badin, Thatta, Sajawal, Shaheed Benazirabad, Nausharo Feroz, Mirpur Khas, Umerkot and Tharparkar.
A total of over 20 million voters will exercise their right of franchise in the two provinces.
The ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) had won a majority of seats in Punjab whereas Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) grabbed most seats in the Sindh province in the first phase of local government elections.
In the first phase, polling was held in 12 districts of Punjab including Lahore, Faisalabad, Gujrat, Chakwal, Bhakkar, Nankana Sahib, Kasur, Pakpattan, Okara, Lodhran, Vehari and Bahawalnagar districts while in Sindh, polling was held in eight districts including Sukkur, Khairpur, Ghotki, Larkana, Shikarpur, Jacobabad, Kashmore and Qamber.
The two other provinces, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in the northwest and Balochistan in the west, voted earlier this year. Khan won in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in May but Nawaz Sharif and his allies came out on top in Balochistan in January.
Earlier, the Election Commission of Pakistan had decided to postpone the union councils polls in eight districts of Sindh and dispatched a summary to the effect for approval to the Chief Election Commissioner.
The districts where elections in certain union councils are likely to be postponed include Hyderabad, Badin, Tharparkar, Tando Allahyar, Mirpur Khas, Benazirabad, Nosheraferoz and Jamshoro. LG polling in Sanghar had also been postponed due to security reasons.
