Layyah sweets case solved; culprit arrested

ISLAMABAD: After a loss of 32 precious lives at the hands of toxic sweets in Layyah, police investigators reached the main culprit, who is shopkeeper’s younger brother.

The mortal chain began when Umer Hayat doled out sweets (laddu) among his neighbours to mark the happy occasion of his grandson’s birth last Wednesday, a private news channel reported.

The sweets contaminated with pesticides immediately left six people dead on the spot.Scores others from different families were hurried to  the hospital.Of them, many passed away pushing the death toll to 32.

The incident was took place in Karor Lal Essan in Layyah district on April 21.

Khalid, younger brother of the shopkeeper, confessed to having mixed the poisonous substance in the sweets, police said.

Police also said Khalid perpetrated the act because of his personal grudge against his elder brother.He committed the most fatal act to take revenge on his brother, he added.

Police also retrieved pesticides hidden underground in the field on identification by Khalid.
