England captain Harry Kane has been awarded an MBE for services to football after winning the golden boot at the World Cup.

The 25-year-old scored six goals — including two penalties — in Russia last summer, notching a hat-trick against Panama, two against Tunisia, and one in the last-16 victory over Colombia.

He did not manage to add to his tally in the quarter-final win against Sweden or the 2-1 defeat to Croatia in the last four, but he still finished the tournament as top scorer.

Kane headed to the palace – Buckingham, not Crystal – to collect his honour from the Duke of Cambridge and showed off his medal alongside fiancee Kate Goodland after the ceremony.

“I’m so proud, it’s a bit out the comfort zone to be off the pitch, but it’s a great day for me and my family,” he said. “With football you’re in your comfort zone, even in front of thousands of people. Here, you don’t want to mess anything up.”
