ISLAMAB: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) on Tuesday tabled a resolution in Nation Assembly to declare Friday as public holiday instead of Sunday.

The resolution was tabled in the NA by the JI MNA Tariq Ullah and was supported by lawmakers of religious parties and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf.

Although treasury benches did not oppose the resolution, MANs were seen divided over the resolution. It is pertinent to mention here that in February 1997, then Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif declared Sunday instead of Friday as weekly holiday.

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif opposed the resolution and said that weekly off day was neither a religious matter nor it has been mentioned in the Holy Quran.
