KARACHI: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi chief Engr. Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman on Wednesday strongly dismal over the state of affairs in connection with the K-Electric and said that the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) session has become a platform for lip service only.
Talking to media representatives, after the session where he represents Karachiites, Engr. Naeem said that people of Karachi are sick of the KE’s tactics to extort money.
On the occasion, he hinted for agitation if the regulator failed to resolve the issue of KE tariff. He alleged that the entity has been using all means without the discrimination of what is right and what is not. He also alleged that the federal government was also playing a nefarious role by not taking concrete steps to reduce the miseries of poor masses.
He was of the view that the people of Karachi would have no option but to take to street if the state of affairs remain same both in NEPRA and the KE.
He said that no one is taking interest in safeguarding the rights of masses, he said and added that the KE received Rs 400 billion from the center but in return did not provide even a little relief to its customers.
The JI leader raised the issue of the shady agreements made in 2009. He demanded to investigate into the privatization of the KE and subsequent series of events.
He said that the company had been illegally charging bank fees from its customers. He said that the problems of bogus and average billing are also on rise and people have no proper platform to raise their voice against the atrocities by the electricity entity.
He said the KE has downsized its employees from 17000 to 10000 but illegally has been charing Rs 0.15 per unit in the name of increased fleet of employees.
He said that a case filed by the JI against KE has been in pending before the supreme court of Pakistan for more than one year but so far only one hearing of cast has been made. He alleged that all decisions in the favor of KE were implemented with immediate effect, while the decisions in the favour of Karachiites are yet to be implemented.
JI Karachi Secretary General Abdul Wahab, JI’s committee on KE affairs head Imran Shahid and Secretary Information Zahid Askari were also accompanying Engr. Naeem.
