KARACHI: Jamaat-Islami (JI) Karachi chief Engineer Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman has warned the government of strong public reaction and agitation if the authorities failed to eliminate flaws from the voter lists.

He expressed these views on Wednesday after chairing a high level party meeting, held at JI Karachi headquarters, Idara Noor-e-Haq.

The meeting reviewed the voter lists and measures so far taken by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to resolve the issues in connection with flawed voter lists. The JI leader highlighted that even up to 60 voters have been registered with the same residential address while even up to 70 voters have been registered at empty plots.

Terming the voter lists as foundation for clean and transparent electoral process, Engineer Hafia Naeem-ur-Rehman said that holding valid elections is impossible without flawless and updated voter lists. He also hinted at knocking the doors of judiciary to get the issues resolved.

He said that upto 25 percent voter lists consist of bogus and invalid registration. He demanded of the ECP to update the voter lists as per the data of NADRA. The JI leader reiterated that his party had been highlighting the issue of electoral corruption. He was of the view that flaws in the voter lists were not less than electoral corruption.

He further said that the ECP remained fail in keeping its words as the authorities had announced to produce flawless voter lists by October 10 and during the process ECP officials had to made door to door contact with individuals so as to ensure transparency and validity of the lists.

The JI leader said that instead of establishing 278 display centers of the lists, the ECP barely setup 20 percent centers with inadequate facilities.

JI Karachi office bearers and selected leaders attended the meeting, held in connection with reviewing the measures taken to ensure flawless elections in 2018.
