Islamabad LG polls: nine candidates representing minorities elected unopposed

ISLAMABAD: Vote counting begins after conclusion moments of Islamabad local government (LG) in Islamabad while first unofficial and unconfirmed results showed victory of nine candidates belonging to minorities.

The candidates who won the electoral battle today are from Union Councils (UCs) 6, 11, 17, 19, 23, 34, 36, 45 and 48.

Minority candidate who belongs to ruling Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N), Rajesh Kumar, elected unopposed in UC-45 Budhana Kala. Asif Sindhu won from UC-36 in 36 Sector G3-4/10 while a minority candidate belonging to Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), Augustin, grabbed victory from UC-34 in 9134.

PML-N’s Liaquat Ali elected from UC-50 Golra from ward no. 6 while another leader Chaudhry Sagheer won from UC-16 from ward no. 5. Three candidates, who were contesting on reserved seats for women, elected unopposed in UCs 8, 16, 23 including an independent female candidate Naheed Akhtar who won from UC-23.

Moreover, five general councilors won unopposed in UCs 8, 16, 33, 46 and 50 wards. PPP’s Sarfaraz Gul won from UC-34’s ward no. 3. It should be mentioned that 13 seats were declared vacant by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) as no candidate submitted nomination forms in 13 UCs for reserved minorities’ seats.
