WASHINGTON: A U.S. military strike killed Islamic State’s second-in-command earlier this week, the White House said on Friday.

Tuesday’s strike near Mosul killed Fadhil Ahmad al-Hayali, also known as Hajji Mutazz, National Security Council spokesman Ned Price said.

Mr. al-Hayali was considered Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi’s senior deputy and “a primary coordinator for moving large amounts of weapons, explosives, vehicles, and people between Iraq and Syria,” Mr. Price said.

The No.-2 militant was in charge of Islamic State operations in Iraq and helped plan the offensive on Mosul in June 2014.
