NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court of India on Wednesday dismissed a petition seeking to halt the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Bill.

However, the top court observed that it would conduct hearings on the measure in Jan 2020.

Last week, the Indian president had signed the controversial Citizenship Amendment Bill into law amid strong protests in the Assam state.

On account of tensions in India’s northeast region over the controversial citizenship bill, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe had cancelled his visit to the country on Friday.
