LAHORE: Acting chief of the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Liaquat Baloch, has said that the Nawaz- Modi meeting was significant in the present scenario but India’s intransigence to pursue her own agenda was the biggest hurdle in the success of the talks between the two countries.
In a statement here on Saturday, he said that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had avoided taking a firm and clear stance before and during the meeting although this was the best opportunity to talk point blank on Indian aggression, New Delhi’s involvement in terrorism in the country, and on the Kashimiris’ right to self determination.
Liaquat Baloch said that whereas Pakistan had cancelled the dinner for the Kashmiri leaders, India was not ready to talk on Kashmir issue nor would Modi abandon his aggressive policy.
He said it was time that Islamabad adopted a firm policy in regard to relations with India, talks and regional issues, through national consensus as had been in the case of the Pak China Economic Corridor. He said that the Prime Minister should not fall into India’s trap of false diplomacy as this was the time to adopt a strong policy with the neighbouring country.
Meanwhile, Liaquat Baloch called on the former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Mr. Justice Iftekhar Muhammad Chaudhry, and discussed with him matters of mutual interest. He also met with the Iranian ambassador in the country and the JUI(F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rahman. Senior JI deputy chief Prof. Khurshid Ahmed, accompanied him.
Liaquat Baloch visited the residence of late Sardar Abdul Qyyum Khan, and offered his condolences to the deceased’s son Sardar Attique Ahmed Khan and other family members. Speaking on the occasion, Liaqat Baloch said that the Sardar Abdul Qayyum Khan was a great leader and had earned a high position in the country’s politics because of his persistent struggle for the Kashmiris rights. He said the slogan “Kashmir Bane Ga Pakistan” had been coined by Sardar Abdul Qayyum Khan and Inshallah time would come when this would become a reality.
Meanwhile, the JI acting chief has expressed great satisfaction over Pakistan becoming a full member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. However, he stressed that the country could play an effective role at international level only it was freed from corruption, nepotism, economic terrorism within the country, and adopted the policy of judicious and equitable distribution of resources. He said that clinging to the MF and the World Bank and begging from all over the world was a failed economic strategy and it was high time the ruling junta changed its attitude and switched over to the policy of self reliance.
