Indian police have arrested Hurriyat leaders including Ghulam Ahmed Gulzar, Bilal Siddiqi and Umar Aadil Dar to prevent them from participating in various programmes to be held in connection with the martyrdom anniversaries of prominent liberation leaders, Muhammad Afzal Guru and Muhammad Maqbool Butt.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the Joint Resistance Leadership comprising Syed Ali Gilani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik has given a call for complete shutdown on Friday (February 09) and Sunday (February 11) on the martyrdom anniversaries of Muhammad Afzal Guru and Muhammad Maqbool Butt. The resistance leaders have also called for peaceful protests on Friday and a march towards the UN office at Sonawar in Srinagar to present a memorandum for the return of the mortal remains of the two martyrs buried in New Delhi’s Tihar Jail to their families for proper burial.

The police took Ghulam Ahmed Gulzar, Bilal Siddiqi and Umar Aadil Dar into custody in Srinagar and lodged them in different police stations. The puppet authorities have already put other Hurriyat leaders including Syed Ali Gilani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Muhammad Yasin Malik, Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai, Mukhtar Ahmed Waza and Muhammad Ashraf Laya under house arrest or in detention to prevent them from leading anti-India demonstrations on the martyrdom anniversaries of Muhammad Afzal Guru and Muhammad Maqbool Butt.

It is to mention here that Muhammad Afzal Guru was hanged by India in New Delhi’s Tihar Jail on 9th February in 2013 while Muhammad Maqbool Butt was sent to the gallows in the same jail on 11th February in 1984. The Indian authorities had buried the two leaders in the premises of the jail and the Kashmiris are demanding the transfer of the mortal remains of the martyrs to the occupied territory for proper burial.
